Local Area Overview
6th Street - As far as “Live Music Capitols of the World” go, Austin is number one, and 6th street is the spot where it all goes down. Home to South by Southwest, perhaps the hippest music festival in North America, 6th street’s entertainment venues and special events are unending. To give you further indication as to the serious entertainment power this area possesses, the street is blocked off to cars on most weekends, catering to the surplus of pedestrian traffic.
Zilker Metropolitan Park - With the Zilker Summer Musical, Zilker bike trail, Zilker botanical garden and, yes, even the famed Zilker Zephyr Miniature Train, you could replace the word “awesome” with the word “Zilker” during your time at this 350-acre park. Or you could just enjoy what the park has to offer and avoid embarrassment.
South Austin Museum of Popular Culture - For struggling local artists, the South Austin Museum of Pop Culture keeps hope (and achievement) alive. The museum is uniquely dedicated to preserving the work of local artists who contribute to Austin’s ever-expanding culture.
Austin City Limits/University of Texas - Tickets to this long running PBS-aired, weekly concert series are hard to come by, but worth your while if you can get a hold of them. Even checking out the studio (filming or not) is well worth it, as it sits smack dab in the middle of the beautiful UT campus. On air since 1976, Austin City Limits has likely played host to at least one favorite artist in your MP3 collection.
